TECHNICAL MEDITATION
explores the relationship between body, technology, and spiritual practice by translating meditation into an interactive and perceptual design system. It originates from reflections on contemporary modes of spiritual practice, informed by bodily experiences within a culturally ritualistic environment, and investigates how inner order and perception can be re-established within highly technologised contexts.
Through an interdisciplinary approach combining fashion design, wearable electronics, material experimentation, and computational processes, bodily data such as breath, gesture, and sound are translated into visual and structural systems. The garment is no longer a static object but a responsive interface that reacts to bodily states through changes in light, pattern, and form.Ultimately, the project constructs a wearable system that integrates perception, ritual, and technological logic, positioning clothing as a medium between internal spiritual states and external digital environments, and establishing new expressions between traditional contemplative practices and future technological conditions.

This stage focused on establishing the project's conceptual framework and research direction. Inspired by the religious and cultural atmosphere of my hometown, together with long-term observations of meditative practice, the project investigates how spiritual cultivation may evolve alongside technological development, proposing interactive garments as a medium to support meditative experiences.Research into contemporary artworks exploring spirituality, digital media, and ecological thinking informed the project, while a conceptual mind map translated ideas such as future meditation, digital nirvana, and interactive experiences into directions for garment structure, material development, and wearable interaction.
This stage focused on developing the interactive system, establishing a design framework through user research, interaction planning, and wearable technology. A questionnaire survey investigated the clothing preferences, functional needs, and acceptance of interactive garments among meditation practitioners, informing both the garment design and user experience.Building on this research, I analysed interactive art practices to develop responsive interaction scenarios and constructed an initial wearable electronic system. By integrating sensors, optical fibres, and an Arduino-based control system, the project explored the relationship between bodily movement, digital feedback, and garment interaction, laying the technical foundation for subsequent prototyping.
This stage focused on establishing the garment language. Structural elements derived from traditional sculptural drapery—including layered capes, hoods, asymmetrical shoulders, and flowing folds—were translated into contemporary silhouettes through draping, exploring how cultural references could be reinterpreted as modern garment structures.Building on this, the draped forms were integrated with the digitally generated geometries developed from breath data. Through digital collage and iterative sketch development, the project refined the relationship between traditional garment language and computational form generation, establishing the overall design direction for the collection.
This stage focused on sound-driven pattern generation and textile translation. Using meditation music as input data, TouchDesigner was employed to translate audio frequencies into dynamic lotus patterns, which were gradually refined into structures suitable for optical fibre layouts and embroidery-based wearable systems.Building on this, fabric blending tests and devoré experiments were conducted to materialise the digitally generated lotus frequency patterns into semi-transparent textile structures. Natural dyeing techniques were then applied to introduce a soft purple gradient, establishing a coherent material language between computational generation and physical textile processes.
This stage focused on the material testing of optical fibre textiles and the development of the final collection visuals. Based on the previously generated “sound–lotus” patterns, digital imagery was translated into wearable optical fibre textile prototypes, where devoré fabrics and embroidery techniques were combined to test the stability and light-emitting behaviour of the conductive structures under different lighting conditions. This material system was then applied to the development of the collection’s design visuals, integrating loose silhouettes, structural references from traditional sculptural forms, and light-based systems into a unified visual direction, establishing the pre-garment stage of the final design outcome.
This stage focused on fitting validation and the final visual refinement of the collection. Through live model fittings, the proportions, drape, and movement of oversized silhouettes, asymmetric capes, and layered constructions were tested, translating design concepts from visual representations into wearable garment prototypes.Industrial pattern drafting, toile development, and technical drawings were systemically integrated to define the structural logic and seam construction of complex deconstructed garments, with key construction points standardised for production clarity.
In parallel, a wearable electronic prototype was developed and tested, including optical fibre lighting systems, gesture sensors, and microcontroller circuits. These components were spatially integrated into the garment structure, establishing an internal interactive system framework that supports the development of the final smart wearable outcome.
This stage focuses on jewellery and accessory systems, inspired by X-ray imagery of ancient Buddhist sculptures, where internal restoration structures and metal fixings are revealed. Extending the project’s earlier narrative of cyclicality and renewal, the work frames internal support systems as persistent temporal traces, exploring how materiality continuously circulates through repair, accumulation, and re-emergence.Based on this concept, nail-like structural elements were deconstructed and reconfigured through metal, 3D-printed resin, photoluminescent materials, and optical fibres. These experiments translate historical restoration traces into a luminous bodily accessory system, establishing a material language between structure and energy.Wearable and lighting tests demonstrate cyclical modes of appearance under changing light conditions, transforming structural repair elements into a wearable system of recurring illumination.
